About This Spot

Michael’s Deli is one of those neighborhood treasures where the pace slows just a little the moment you step inside. Nestled on Harvard Street in Brookline, it carries the comforting buzz of a place that knows its regulars but warmly welcomes newcomers with an easy smile and a genuine sense of care. The space itself is cozy and bustling—intimate enough for quiet conversations yet lively with the soft clatter of orders being called and sandwiches carefully crafted behind the counter.

Walking in, you can feel the rhythm of a classic deli—built on authentic flavors and a love for hearty, thoughtfully prepared sandwiches that never rush the experience. There’s a certain joy in watching a fresh loaf pulled from the basket, the layers of corned beef, pastrami, or hand-mixed chicken salad piled generously on top, and the nostalgic hum of Dr Browns and housemade treats waiting to be paired alongside. It’s the kind of place where you might find yourself lingering, sharing stories over a perfectly toasted rye or debating which of the ‘dirty’ sandwiches to try next—a playful twist on traditional deli fare that invites curiosity and surprises the palate.

Michael’s effortlessly blends that old-school deli tradition with neighborhood convenience, creating a casual, relaxed spot that feels deeply rooted in the community. The staff move with a practiced ease that suggests genuine pride in their craft, making each visit feel like stepping into a gathering place rather than just a quick stop for takeout. Whether you’re grabbing a lunch before the movies or savoring a leisurely afternoon bite, there’s a subtle warmth here—an invitation to slow down, enjoy the simple pleasure of well-made food, and savor the small human moments that make every visit memorable.

Found this place recently when I was in the area and happened to be hungry. Great staff and were friendly when entering. There is a really good selection of sandwiches and I went with Michael's Choice since it was my first time here and clearly this Michael person already has their name on the sign. Definitely worth it and I will be back to try many more of their signature sandwiches. Biggest issues are parking so it would be best to find parking and walk there. It is perfect if you are walking by already though. Minimal indoor seating so 1 or 2 people together is fine but 4 or more is not easy. I plan to go back again soon and would definitely recommend checking it out if you have not yet done so.

Small neighborhood deli, and one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had. Stayed in the Brookline area, walked to this deli for the sandwich, and ordered the Thorty Black and Gold because it looked interesting. Pastrami, cheddar, hots, and honey mustard on a fresh roll. This sandwich did not disappoint - the pastrami literally melts in your mouth. The bread was so soft with a crispy outside crust. All the flavors really worked nicely together in perfect balance. You can tell from the first bite of this sandwich that this place puts a ton of love and care into every menu item. I want one of their “Body By Corned Beef” t-shirts. Highly recommend this spot.

Corn beef and pastrami was good and the sandwich had plenty of meat. However, pricy for the amount. A bit crowded and tight in the front. Staff were fine but could have been more helpful with ordering as it was my first time there. Worth a stop, in if you’re in the area(Coolidge Corner).

The “thorty black and gold” is so ridiculously good - I could eat that sandwich every single day. My girlfriend and I love to come here for a bite before the movies and it’s always a treat.

By far, one of my favorite Delis. Everything I've ever ordered has been excellent. I love the atmosphere, too. Great staff. And the owner, Steve, is great. 2nd time I've ordered the Reuben. It's perfect.

Michael’s Deli wasn’t my first visit, but every time I come here I think the same thing: the quality here is not a coincidence, it’s a standard. Everything I’ve eaten has been fresh, well-balanced, and clearly prepared with care. No matter what I order, there’s never a moment of “it’s okay.” The flavors are clean, the ingredients are high quality, and the portions are satisfying. But what really makes the place stand out isn’t just the food — it’s the people. The staff is incredibly attentive, fast, and genuinely kind. It doesn’t feel forced or scripted; you can tell they actually care. Even when it’s busy, no one looks annoyed, everything runs smoothly, and you feel more like a regular than just another customer. The atmosphere is another big plus. It’s clean, organized, comfortable, and at the same time full of life. Whether you want to sit down and enjoy your meal or just grab something quickly, it always feels good being there. In terms of value for money, it’s also above Boston standards — you really get what you pay for. In short: it’s rare to find a place where food, service, and atmosphere are all this consistent at the same time. That’s why I can honestly say Michael’s Deli is no longer just a place to “try once,” but a spot I go to on purpose. I recommend it without hesitation. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Well deserved 5 stars. White fish- to die for. Pickles- the same. And super creative knishes, filled with mashed potatoes, kasha (buckwheat), or other savory meat and pastrami fillings. The owner is making every week another surprised and crazy knish. Also some desert knishes. Stand in line as this is the definition of paradise. But- take the food out. The place itself is not welcoming to seat and eat. Nor is the music.
